How Franchising Gave This Entrepreneur a True Shot at Financial Freedom

For seven years, Ryan Byrd worked 60 hours a week and was completely miserable. "I didn’t know what my alternative was but knew that if I didn’t make a change, I’d be stuck there forever. My buddy was a used car manager at Volkswagen, so I quit my job and sold cars while I figured out my next move."

O2E: What were you doing for work before you joined WOW 1 DAY PAINTING?

RB: I became a general contractor right out of high school, instead of going to college. I started working with my father; he’s an architect so he designed the houses and I built them. After that, I started my own underground utility business but when my business partner died in a car accident, it didn’t feel right to keep the company going.

I went into sales and started representing lighting manufacturers. For seven years, I worked 60 hours a week and was completely miserable. I didn’t know what my alternative was but knew that if I didn’t make a change, I’d be stuck there forever. My buddy was a used car manager at Volkswagen, so I quit my job and sold cars while I figured out my next move.

O2E: How did you hear about WOW 1 DAY PAINTING?

RB: One day, out of nowhere, a franchise broker called me and asked if I’d ever considered franchising. I hadn’t, and I thought it was a scam at first. But my gut told me to hear him out.

After talking a few times, I started seriously looking into opportunities. He told me about WOW 1 DAY PAINTING and I was interested right away; I was trying to stay in the trades industry, given my background. From the moment I talked to a representative from head office and felt the energy from O2E Brands, I knew I was done looking.

O2E: How does owning a franchise compare to your previous business experience?

RB: I’ve always had an entrepreneurial spirit and I did well on my own. But as a Franchise Partner, the growth I’ve seen compared to my other companies has been astronomical.  In the next five years, I believe our franchise will be the largest residential painting company in Knoxville.

I’m also the happiest I’ve ever been. I get to make my own schedule, which means I can take my kids to school every day or go out of town when I want to.  Life is more stressful in some ways, but that’s just part of owning a business. In every way, my life has changed for the better.

O2E: What advice would you give someone looking into a franchise opportunity?

RB: Do your due diligence and make sure it’s the right fit for both you and the franchisor. Also, don’t buy a franchise if you’re not willing to follow the process. Assuming you know more than the franchisor is the fastest way to fail, so be ready to go all in and use the systems in place.

After I discovered WOW 1 DAY PAINTING, my life changed a lot in a very short period of time. My wife and I actually eloped when we came to Vancouver to meet the WOW 1 DAY PAINTING team! Within a month, I had gotten married, bought a franchise and a new house, and became the step dad to two kids. My stress levels were higher than ever, but it was all about good things. If I can do this while going through all that change, anyone can.
