We’re excited to introduce the new Managing Director of Shack Shine, Rodney Larmand! Rodney is no stranger to the world of franchising. He started his career with College Pro Painting as a student and stayed on with the company for 28 years. That’s not something you hear of very often these days!
He started as a franchise owner and worked his way up, eventually becoming President of College Pro Canada. This is exactly what makes him the perfect fit for Shack Shine—he has a unique understanding of what it means to help entrepreneurial-minded people build a business in the world of franchising.
We had a chance to sit down with Rodney Larmand and ask him a bit about his background and why he ultimately chose to join O2E Brands and Shack Shine.
O2E Brands: What was your background prior to Shack Shine?
RL: I started with College Pro as a student in 1989 with my own franchise. In my last year of school, I was promoted to a GM position. I was so focused on my new job that I stopped paying attention to school—I missed my midterms! Thankfully, I had a great relationship with my professors and was able to write 100% finals so I could finish school while I continued to work in my new full time GM role.
Most people only stayed with the company for 3 years or so because the business model revolves around transition and students typically move on after they finish school. I stayed on with College Pro for so many years because I loved the concept of providing an opportunity for students to learn how to run their own business and become leaders. I found a lot of meaning in being part of that journey. I was able to move up through to various VP positions, finally working my way up to President of the company.
O2E: How did you first get involved with O2E Brands?
RL: There are a number of franchise owners and O2E Brands employees who got their start with College Pro and I had kept in touch with a lot of them. One of those people was James Alisch, someone whom I've always had immense respect and trust in, who is now the Managing Director of WOW 1 DAY PAINTING and You Move Me. When he was still working with 1-800-GOT-JUNK?, I came to visit him at the Junktion (that’s what the head office is called) one day. He gave me an office tour and I was really impressed with the culture and the overall vibe of the office. That really stuck with me.
A few years ago, James introduced me to Erik Church, COO of O2E Brands. We had a coffee and talked about the old days of College Pro and some similarities between our companies. At that time, I wasn’t interested in leaving, but left thinking O2E was a company that was going to grow quickly and that I would love the opportunity to work with Erik one day. Eventually, I decided I was ready to make a move, and an opportunity came up with 1-800-GOT-JUNK?. I moved into the position of Vice President of Enterprise Operations. It was great to get out there, spending time in the sales center, on the trucks and in operations learning all the better practices in the system and ways we could standardize them across the company.
Then the opportunity came up with Shack Shine. I was excited by the energy and passion behind growing the brand. It has a similar vibe to College Pro, in the sense that we’re helping entrepreneurs start their own businesses. It’s something I’ve always been passionate about.
O2E: What are you looking forward to most about working with Shack Shine?
RL: It’s such a young brand and there’s so much potential to grow the business. We’re all about creating lasting relationships with our customer. I’m also excited to look for ways for all the brands to work together. We’re all part of one family and there’s amazing potential to bring all the brands together to create better experiences for our customers. O2E Brands is really a one stop shop for people. They can get all their home service needs met in one place which is an amazing experience for a customer.
O2E: Why did O2E Brands and Shack Shine feel like a natural next step for you?
RL: At College Pro it was all about being part of a team and building something. It felt like my extended family. O2E Brands has that same feeling. It’s about having fun and building something together—goals matter, performance matters, and people matter!
What appealed to me is probably also what appealed to many of the current franchise owners who have a background with College Pro. I see Shack Shine as the next step; it’s a bigger and more mature business model for those who are finished school and are looking to build something that will last. I’m looking forward to helping people take that next step.
O2E: Now it’s time to really get to know you. What are your passions outside of work?
RL: I love hanging out with the family traveling and playing games. We play a lot of card games always for money. My daughter’s bank account has grown nicely as she’s learned to bet and she knows I would never let her win! I’m currently driving my 7th Jeep Wrangler and plan to drive a Jeep until I can’t drive anymore. I love all sports and still play hockey regularly but when it comes to watching sports, I generally only watch Curling and NFL football. I would also like to state for the record that I am a very passionate Denver Broncos fan and will argue that John Elway is one of the top 5 QB’s of all time.
O2E: Do you have any fun facts about you, or anything else you'd like to share?
RL: I love to have fun and find a way to always have fun. I love to scare others and make bets, any bet but the most interesting thing that gets everyone is the fact that I don’t like cheese. I’m always asked if I can’t eat it and I respond no I just don’t like it!
